Did you know that xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs? Xylitol is a natural occurring substance that is widely used as a sugar substitute. Even small amounts of... xylitol can cause hypoglycemia which is low blood sugar, seizures, liver failure or even death. It is used in sugar free gum, candies, baking goods, breath mints, children’s chewable/gummy supplements and many other things. The most common source of xylitol poisoning comes from sugar-free gum. To give you an idea of how toxic this can be most suger-free gum contains 1 g/piece so only 2 pieces of gum would result in severe hypoglycemia while 10 pieces can result in liver failure! Symptoms of xylitol poisoning develop rapidly, usually within 15-30 minutes of consumption. Signs of hypoglycemia may include any or all of the following: Vomiting, Weakness, Lack of coordination or difficulty walking or standing, Depression/lethargy, Tremors or Seizures. Fast and aggressive treatment by your veterinarian is essential to effectively reverse any toxic effects and prevent the development of severe problems. If you personally use products containing xylitol, make sure they are stored safely out of reach of your pets. Do not share any food that may contain xylitol with your pets. When brushing your pets’ teeth, only use toothpaste intended for pets, never one made for human use. Pictured is a patient that got a hold of some sugar-free gum.
